| Looking Toward the Future |

A message from the Division Administrator... My last message in this space outlined the drastic cuts that MHDS was facing this winter. As we have moved through spring, and this exciting legislative session, it appears that some of the most drastic predictions may be averted. One such example, the Fernley Mental Health Clinic, which had been closed, will re-open with help of Federal funds. Also, the funding for substance abuse prevention and treatment remains level. We have been able to maintain our services to Nevadans who need them. The number of jobs lost has been greatly reduced from the original estimates. While the necessary changes have not been painless, the MHDS team has gone to great effort to minimize the impacts of these cuts on both staff and people receiving our services, and the team can be proud of those efforts.
Now we must look toward the future. In that spirit, I have initiated a major strategic planning initiative across the Division. A diverse team of leaders met to identify the major areas to be addressed. The second phase of the initiative is now underway as smaller groups work on each of the identified areas. As we work through this process, we will rededicate ourselves to measuring the effectiveness of our efforts and focusing our resources on the most effective interventions. We will explore the benefits of collaborating with other organizations to maximize our service to Nevada. Finally, we will examine our own processes to ensure they are as efficient as possible. The plan resulting from this process will shape MHDS now and into the future.
As we move toward that future, we are saying goodbye to a number of our colleagues here at MHDS who are retiring this year. The retirement of so many dedicated, long term employees leaves us all with a sense of loss. To those who are leaving I would like to express my gratitude for your service to Nevada. Your knowledge will be missed and your absence will be felt.
To those team members who will stay on into the future, including staff, consumers and community partners, I would like to say thank you for your support and dedication. Together we will continue to see that Nevadans who are challenged by mental illness, developmental disability or substance addiction receive the services that support their recovery. |
